Announcing the

MI Geotour 2003

Mt Isa Inlier

21-27 August 2003

Geoff Derrick of G.M.Derrick and Associates invites from 4 to 7 people to join him in a geological venture around parts of the Mt Isa Inlier, NW Queensland, mixing mine visits with some of Australia’s finest geology.  As geological guide, Geoff brings to this Geotour a great depth of understanding of the geology and mineral deposits of the Mt Isa Inlier, plus a current and pragmatic understanding of all of the new ideas being generated  about the Inlier – the deeper water southeast facing depositional wedges of the Lawn Hill Platform and Leichhardt Fault trough, the carbonate ‘factories’, far-field back arc environments for Pb-Zn deposits, sequence stratigraphy, the correlations with the Curnamona province etc etc., plus all the ongoing controversies re timing and origins of Cu vs Pb-Zn.

It is often overlooked that in between all the mineral deposits resides a geological framework that in itself is one of the great geological laboratories – the world of continent-scale ash-flow volcanics, geology of Proterozoic rifts, carbonate environments seen from pristine evaporite environments through to world class skarn deposits, iron formations, Mn-rich & garnet-rich exhalites, fully exposed unconformites in transgressive, clastic sequences and hematite-rich graniitc breccias – all in the one classic Proterozoic Mt Isa Inlier !!
