5-day short courses
MINERAL
ECONOMICS AND COMMODITY MARKETING
10 – 14 November, 2003
This short course is
designed to provide mining industry personnel, including exploration,
development and production staff, with an appreciation of the economic
environment of the industry in general and the particular constraints imposed
on projects by specific commodity marketing regimes. Reliable commodity marketing information is essential for
evaluating whether or not to develop new projects or to expand existing
projects. The ability of a project to
meet the needs of the market or a market niche better than competing suppliers
may be critical to the decision to develop or expand. The course will review general mineral economics theory first,
followed by more detailed review of the economics of the mining industry,
commodity marketing, marketing strategies and case histories. The mechanics of
marketing a range of mineral commodities will be reviewed to illustrate the
difference between the gross metal value in ore and the mine revenue derived
from that ore.
