I wish to draw
to your attention the upcoming BHEI2003 conference to be held in Broken Hill
next month.
This will be
the sixth BHEI conference and promises to be a key event in furthering the
understanding of the mineral systems of the Curnamona Province.
The Broken
Hill Exploration Initiative is a collaborative venture between NSW Department
of Mineral Resources, Primary Industry and Resources South Australia and
Geoscience Australia. Also associated with the BHEI are the Cooperative
Research Centres for Landscape, Environment and Mineral Exploration and
Predictive Mineral Discovery.
The conference
program will cover several themes, including wide-ranging studies of the
Curnamona Province, copper-gold mineralisation, new airborne technologies,
regolith studies, opportunities around the Curnamona margins, lead-zinc
mineralisation in the Broken Hill Block and tectonic evolution of the Willyama
Supergroup. Highlights include the latest information on geochronology, lead
isotopes, first images from the Falcon airborne gravity survey, interpretation
of hyperspectral data, and an account of operations by Perilya and Consolidated
Broken Hill since their takeover of the Broken Hill mining leases.
A four-day pre-conference
excursion will be held, covering the Olary district in South Australia and the
Broken Hill Block, New South Wales. The excursion will focus on mineralisation,
especially gold and copper prospects plus associated hard rock and regolith
geology. On Sunday 6th July drill core from the province will be laid out for
inspection and Ian Plimer will lead two short tours of the Consolidated Broken
Hill leases. Following the conference there will be a three-day excursion to
see the Proterozoic-Palaeozoic and regolith geology of the Koonenberry region,
north of Broken Hill.

for Participants
Olary-Broken Hill Excursion
2-5 July
The excursion will start at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday 2nd
July, in the carpark opposite the Department of Mineral Resources office,
corner of Sulphide and Blende Streets. Transport will be by 4WD bus and a few
Landcruisers. Lunches will be provided, and the vehicles will return to Broken
Hill each evening. Participants will have to find their own accommodation,
breakfasts and evening meals.
Activities on Sunday 6 July
On
Sunday there will be a drill core display and a chance for a limited number of
people to visit one of the South mine open cuts, with Ian Plimer. There will
also be an icebreaker function at 7 p.m., at the Geocentre (corner of Crystal
and Bromide Streets). Registration, with abstracts volume, will be available at
the function.
Drill Core Display, Sunday 6
July
There will be a display of drill core from a number of
prospects in NSW and S.A., held on the Perilya mining leases. Participants are
asked NOT to make their own way to the mine. Transport will be provided by
minibus from the carpark opposite the Department of Mineral Resources office,
corner of Sulphide and Blende Streets. The minibus will make several return
trips during the day, beginning at 9:30 a.m., and probably finishing at 3 p.m.
South Mine Open Cut, Sunday
6 July
Ian Plimer will lead two short tours of either the Block
14 open cut, or the Kintore open cut, at the old South mine, now owned by
Consolidated Broken Hill Ltd. The two tours are identical. Transport will be by
minibus from the carpark mentioned above. The first tour will depart at 9 a.m.
and finish at noon. The second will depart at 1 p.m. and finish at 4 p.m.
Participants will need to use their own sturdy boots. Safety helmets can be
provided at the mine.
Conference Monday 7th to
Wednesday 9th July
The conference will be held at the Broken Hill
Entertainment Centre, corner of Chloride and Blende Streets, one block from the
NSW Department of Mineral Resources office. On Monday the first talk will
commence at 8:30 a.m. Registration will commence at 8 a.m. and continue during
the day.
Posters
Poster
presenters will be able to set up at the Entertainment Centre between 4 p.m.
and 7 p.m. Sunday 6th. Boards will be available. If you wish to display

Dinner
The Conference dinner will be held at the Junction Hotel,
corner of Argent and Silver Streets, starting 7 p.m. Tuesday 8th. All those
attending must be pre-paid.
Koonenberry Excursion 10-12
July
The
excursion will depart from Broken Hill early on Thursday 12th July. Transport
will be by 4WD vehicle. All people attending should contact the excursion
leader, Kingsley Mills (phone 08 8088 9321
or email millsk@minerals.nsw.gov.au.)
before the conference. Kingsley will arrange transport and designate the time
and place for commencement of the trip.
On
this excursion, participants will stay in shearers quarters at night, and all
food will be provided, but participants will need to bring such equipment as
sleeping bags and utensils.
