~ Abstract ~
Techniques associated with the exploration for mineral deposits are constantly evolving and comprise geological targeting, the latest theories on ore genesis, geophysics, geochemistry and use of Landsat for example. Above all is the input from dedicated and experienced explorationists with a strong desire for success. While in most cases, success is attributed to one or two people in any particular discovery, it is team work that plays a pivotal role and should never be dismissed.
Examples from the talk are case histories from Mount Morgan Cu Au, Murphyores HM, Ginkgo HM, Bougainville Cu Au, Ok Tedi Cu Au and Lihir Au deposits which focus on the people involved and events leading up to each discovery.
In all fields of life, learning from history is important for the now and for the future. The presenter has been privileged to research and record, often with input from the discoverers themselves, a number of exploration successes in his book The Hope Factor.
Tony last addressed SMEDG in September 2011. Here's the 60MB .pdf Presentation.
