SMEDG - PREVIOUS MEETING

DATE: Tuesday 15th April 1980 at 4.30 pm.

VENUE: Rugby Club, 1st Floor, Crane Place (off 31a Pitt St)

SPEAKER: Rupert Crowe - Aquitaine Mining (Ireland) Ltd

TOPIC: "The Carbonate Hosted Lead Zinc Deposits of Ireland"

For the last 10 years it has been realised that Ireland is an important metallogenic province, particularly for lead and zinc, and although Ireland was always known as an historic mining area for these metals, it was only in the 1960's that Government tax concessions sparked off an exploration effort which has proved the large potential of the country for these metals.
The talk will describe the major Irish orebodies (Silvermines, Tynagh, Navan), compare the similiarities and differences to MVT deposits and discuss the genesis of the deposits with reference to the structural and facies controls collectively controlling ore deposition.
Mr Crowe has just been transferred by Aquitaine to Australia from Ireland, where he has spent the last several years working as a geologist on base metal deposits in that country.
Aquitaine will host the meeting.
