SMEDG - PREVIOUS MEETING

DATE: Thursday 28th May 1998 - 5.30pm for 6pm Joint Meeting with AIG

VENUE: 3rd Floor, Rugby Club, Rugby (Crane) Place, Sydney

SPEAKERS: Mr Stan Church - US Geological Survey

TOPIC: "Evaluation of the Impact of Historic Metal Mining on Water Quality in the Western United States"

The values of the general public in the US have changed in recent years. Land management policy has shifted from harvesting of timber, mineral extraction and grazing to a broader perspective of resource utilisation. The US legal framework has allowed citizens to use the courts to force the cleanup of watersheds surrounding old mine sites. How does this compare to the Australian mining environment?
Stan Church is a USGS geologist who operates at a level which enables him to present ideas directly to the Vice President, Al Gore. His talk will focus on several case histories of old mine sites and cover the geology, geochemistry and geophysics involved in the identification and remediation of water contamination from these and the legal implications.
