Announcing the MI Geotour 2003

Mt Isa Inlier,21-27 August 2003

Geoff Derrick of G.M.Derrick and Associates invites from 4 to 7 people to join him in a geological venture around parts of the Mt Isa Inlier, NW Queensland, mixing mine visits with some of Australia’s finest geology. As geological guide, Geoff brings to this Geotour a great depth of understanding of the geology and mineral deposits of the Mt Isa Inlier, plus a current and pragmatic understanding of all of the new ideas being generated about the Inlier the deeper water southeast facing depositional wedges of the Lawn Hill Platform and Leichhardt Fault trough, the carbonate factories, far-field back arc environments for Pb-Zn deposits, sequence stratigraphy, the correlations with the Curnamona province etc etc., plus all the ongoing controversies re timing and origins of Cu vs Pb-Zn.

It is often overlooked that in between all the mineral deposits resides a geological framework that in itself is one of the great geological laboratories the world of continent-scale ash-flow volcanics, geology of Proterozoic rifts, carbonate environments seen from pristine evaporite environments through to world class skarn deposits, iron formations, Mn-rich & garnet-rich exhalites, fully exposed unconformites in transgressive, clastic sequences and hematite-rich graniitc breccias all in the one classic Proterozoic Mt Isa Inlier !!
