Brief Abstract:
With notable exceptions the reflection seismic method has not enjoyed widespread use in the minerals industry, despite being the geophysical tool of choice for hydrocarbon and coal exploration.
The relatively high cost of the method together with the complexities introduced by high rock velocities and complex 3D geometries in mining environments have confounded the easy translation of the method from ‘soft’ rocks to ‘hard’ rocks.
2D and 3D seismic case histories over VMS, gold and nickel deposits demonstrate that recent developments in the technology have enabled high resolution seismic to make a significant and cost effective contribution to exploration programs around known assets.
Specific developments include: Higher fold acquisition and more sophisticated data processing; small ‘mine-friendly’ crews; and acquisition systems with lower environmental footprint.
