Many of the mineral deposits discovered in Australia over the last 30 years have been attributed to geochemical exploration surveys. In deeply weathered terrains, exploration geochemistry has generally proved more successful in targeting mineralisation than exploration geophysics.
In the more extensively explored terrains of Australia, Europe and North America, the main challenge facing exploration geochemists is the detection of mineralisation through thick, transported and/or deeply leached cover.
Extensive research is being directed towards new generation selective geochemical extraction and new methods of processing geochemical data that are capable of isolating subtle anomalies in soils, stream sediments, groundwater and vegetation.
David Cohen is a senior lecturer in geochemistry and geological data processing at UNSW and is an associate of CRC LEME.His research areas extend from sampling and analytical methods to development and application of statistical techniques.
