SMEDG SYDNEY MINERAL EXPLORATION DISCUSSION GROUP

– PREVIOUS MEETING

DATE: Thursday 30 MAY 1991 at 5.15 pm

VENUE: Rugby Club, Crane Place, Sydney

SPEAKERS: PROF. G. NEIL PHILLIPS (James Cook University of North Queensland)

TOPIC: “WITWATERSRAND GOLD: IS THERE A NEW ANGLE?”

Almost half the gold produced this century has come from the Wirwatersrand Basin of South Africa. It has no known analogue of any significance as a gold producer.
Obviously, Wits-type gold is an attractive target as anyone finding just a modest-size Wits mine immediately becomes a major mining company (500,000+oz Au per year, 30+ year life).
Exploration for similar deposits has been considerable, especially in Australia and Canada and there is a wide perception that all avenues have been tried. But what if the basic search model was totally wrong….?
