TOPIC: “The Discovery and Geology of the Goonumbla and Lake Cowal Deposits” In 1971, Geopeko targetted areas in the Lachlan Fold Belt for base metal exploration. The Parkes area was selected for VHMS potential and an early discovery led to a detailed geological and geochemical appraisal of the poorly exposed Goonumbla Volcanics. A number of porphyry copper-gold centres were discovered of which three are now in an advanced stage of mine planning. These are Endeavour 22, Endeavour 26 North and Endeavour 27. In 1980 a set of empirical criteria were formulated to extend the Goonumbla discoveries. This programme focussed on the Lake Cowal area and persistent exploration led to the discovery of the Endeavour 42 gold resource.
