SMEDG - OLD NOTICES ARCHIVE 2001

21st December 2001 - SMEDG-AIG's Sydney Harbour Cruise
Booking Form Here

It's Heart-Bypass Time!
Jock Gillfillan had a single at North Shore and yours truly went for the double (with half pike and twist) at The San, both on Wednesday the 12th December
Jock went home yesterday (18th) and I got home today. We're both powering along. Thanks for all the e-mails and phone calls. Neither Margaret or Libby is prepared to let either of us go on the Harbour Cruise!
And, to complete the Trifecta, Geoff Derrick, in an unashamed attempt to steal what little of my limelight was left after Jock's effort, had a new high-tech carbon heart valve installed.
All this was quite inevitable; the reduced number of geology graduates means that the old ones have to be refurbished.
We are the turbo-charged Old Brigade!

Life is full of little adventures whereas the alternative has none at all. Watch your Health!

PREMIER ANNOUNCES 160 DEPARTMENT OF MINERAL RESOURCES JOBS TO MOVE TO MAITLAND
(Announced 23 October 2001)

The Premier of NSW, Mr Bob Carr and Minister for Mineral resources, Mr Eddie Obeid today announced 160 Department of Mineral resources jobs will move from Sydney to Maitland in the Hunter.
Mr Carr made the announcement in response to a Question Without Notice from Country Labor MP for Maitland, Mr John Price.
"These are jobs going to where they are best suited and where they are needed most." Mr Carr said. "The move will have a fantastic spin-off effect. "These 160 families will spend their pay packets in local restaurants and shops. "They will buy their lunches and clothing from Maitland businesses and employ local tradespeople for repairs around the home," Mr Carr said. The move by Department of Mineral Resources is the latest initiative in the State Government's comprehensive program to move government jobs and services to regional and rural NSW. Since June 1995 the Government has created more than 1,900 government jobs outside Sydney and relocated more than 1,000.
"The moves by the Department of Mineral Resources highlighted the State Government's commitment to relocating Government jobs to regional and rural areas," Mr Carr said. Since April 1995, the State Government has relocated or is in the processing of relocating a number of government departments and agencies.

This announcement deserves a response and comments are called for, for the Comments Page. Certainly the two exploration geologists left in Sydney in 2004 will be disappointed.....

Kerin Mary Donovan

Kerin Mary Donovan 1942 - 2001

A TRIBUTE

Kerin (Hall) Donovan passed away on Wednesday, July the 4th, 2001. Kerin's funeral was held at 1.30 pm on Tuesday, 10 July at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Bradleys Head Road, Clifton Gardens.
A Memorial Service was also held for Kerin in Manila.
Kerin, a very capable geologist, was part of SMEDG for many years and, while resident in Sydney, attended most of our meetings and events. She battled cancer courageously and was very grateful for the excellent hospice care she received in the Philippines over the last few years before returning recently to Victoria . Kerin is missed by her many friends and colleagues and we extend our sympathy to her family.

GUEST SPEAKER: DR DON EMERSON AM
"QUO VADIS EXPLORATOR"

What is this talk about? Will Dr Don Emerson emulate John Hines with an enthralling, rasping review of the classic 1951 movie? (probably not!). Will the Quo Vadis GPS street level, moving map, palm computing system be demonstrated? (doubtful). Could there be a link to the Quo Vadis offer of golf and car hire in Portugal? (does not seem likely, though Steve would be interested). Will you discover where are you going as an explorer? Could we discover the future of exploration in Australia? By clever application of ancient, medieval and modern references, certain telling truths will emerge, and lives will be enriched. Phone home, delay dinner, organise the baby sitter and be there!

About $48 million, or 8.4% of the total $572 million spent on Australian exploration was related to native title issues. This is expected to increase if/when the backlog of applications clears.
